The Clique: New Girl in Town

Our very first episode! You can also listen along here.

This week we covered the first book in Lisi Harrison’s series The Clique.

Meet our main characters: Massie, Claire (6:15), Alicia, Dylan, and Kristen (18:20).

Image from The Clique (manga edition). Notice Massie’s long hair (not a bob), and the way Dylan is exactly the same size as the other girls? We did too.
Even in the manga, the adults depicting Dylan make a concerted effort to show her mid-chew in front of a big bucket of food, despite this not taking place in the novelization (18:54)

If you’re like us and you want to know what Massie smelled like at 12, don’t worry, we found the perfume notes for Chanel no. 19: galbanum, iris, ylang-ylang, lily-of-the-valley, and rose (7:30). Meanwhile Clare wore the now-discontinued (probably) Gwen Stefani L.L.A.M.B. and Courtney the classic Pink Sugar (8:17).

The Clique’s Wikipedia page does state that Lisi Harrison named Octavian Country Day as a joking reference to the disorder, but the article cited in this statement can no longer be found (17:12).

Another classic example of a clique tricking someone via conference call (39:13)

A prime example of Chris Abeley flirting with Massie (47:31) from the manga. In the novel version Massie is putting her hair in a bun in this scene, but the illustrator simply chose to give Massie…head lice?

If you’re interested in buying a Juicy Couture charm bracelet just like Clare, you’re in luck; there are plenty available, including this one we found on Poshmark (1:03:03).

The aforementioned Juicy Couture charm bracelet. Clare’s was “worn to death” and thus could not be pictured.

Similarly, here are some Tory Burch riding boots if you’re interested in seeing the rate of inflation for preppy footwear since Clare was in high school (1:19:05).

Here is some more information on the influencers we mentioned, Danielle Bernstein (1:09:23) and Caroline Calloway (2:38).

State of the Union (1:23:16)
